Masterclass on Book Design in Vilnius
Jul 19, 2024
The Workshop
I had the privilege of teaching a three-day masterclass on book design for the students of European Humanities University in Vilnius. The program was packed with everything I’ve learned over the years: my personal journey, design techniques, production processes, finances, philosophy, and inspiration.
Day 1 was hands-on, with practical exercises—including cutting up books. Days 2 and 3 focused on digital workflows in Figma and diving deep into what makes a book not only beautiful but meaningful. My goal was to create a course that equips students with the tools to push boundaries and, someday, create books so incredible they’ll leave me speechless.
Unconventional Teaching
One of the highlights (and surprises) of the workshop was the reaction to letting students cut up books. It stirred up some unexpected noise—apparently, in the formal academic world, this approach can still be seen as bold. To me, it was a way to break down barriers and spark creativity.
Thank you to everyone who understood the deeper message and embraced the experience with open minds.
Gratitude
A huge thanks to Sasha Asterman and EHU for hosting this workshop. Teaching this masterclass has been an unforgettable milestone, and I hope the students walked away inspired to create and innovate.
Ačiū labai, Vilnius—it’s been amazing. Time to head home. ❤️
